Fr. Rhett Williams is a native of Charleston, SC and an alumnus of our Catholic High School in Charleston, Bishop England. He attended Furman University here in Greenville, graduating in 2007 with a double major in History and Spanish, before spending a little over three years in El Salvador with the Peace Corps. After Peace Corps, he ran the Drexel House in Charleston and worked in the Vocations Office with the Diocese for a year before entering seminary. He spent six years in seminary at Theological College in Washington, DC where he received a Licentiate in Philosophy (PhL), a Masters of Divinity (MDiv), and the Pontifical Bachelors in Sacred Theology (STB) degree. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Charleston on June 8, 2018 and spent the summer at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico as one of the Catholic Chaplains before being assigned as parochial vicar at St. Mary Magdalene in Simpsonville in August 2018. In July 2020, he was made Administrator of St. Thomas More Catholic Church and Newman Center and Catholic Chaplain to the University of South Carolina. In July 2021, he was made Pastor of St. Thomas More and Vocations Director for the diocese. Fr. Williams also serves as Catholic Chaplain for the following: Kirkland Correctional Institute (men) and Camille Graham Correctional Institution (women), MUSC Health Columbia Medical Center Downtown, and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. In 2022, he was invested as a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre. He also serves on the Diocese of Charleston's Presbyteral Council.
Fr. Williams loves to play all kinds of sports, especially pick up basketball and is a big South Carolina Gamecocks football and baseball fan, while admitting to following Duke basketball. He enjoys reading in the areas of history and theology, cooking when there is time, and always loves a good B movie. Contact [email protected].
